Organic Baby Clothing
No CommentsThere is a false assumption that organic clothing is not at all trendy. There is a bizarre tendency to associate the Hippie look of the 70s with organic fabric. Natural, non-synthetic fibers, these are the basic features of organic clothing, and the promotion of such products is usually a feature of environmental movements concerned with organic agriculture. The fibers used in the manufacturing of organic clothing are produced from plants in organic crops without the use of fertilizers, pesticides, radiation or genetic modifications. If a product is organic, then, it needs to carry a label and an approval from the United States Department of Agriculture.
Sustainable organic clothing plays an incredible role for environmental movements. Wool, cotton, silk and hemp can all be organic, and the fibers extracted by ecological processes don’t get dyed or treated with other chemical substances. Whether you show environmental interests, health concerns or animal rights sympathy, wearing organic clothing represents an elegant and positive way of protecting nature. Although the health benefits are not direct for organic clothing, sales have increased together with people’s interest in the destiny of the planet.
Body detoxification is sometimes related to the use of organic clothing, but the arguments are not that solid in this direction. Nevertheless, scientific studies have not yet shown any relationship between health and organic clothing. There is an indirect benefit only if we think that unpolluted crops provide good organic fibers, and that the quality of the air, water or soil is preserved. The price is the major obstacle that keeps eco-products somehow limited. How affordable are such apparel items? 100% organic clothing sometimes cost twice as much as conventional clothing.
Efforts are being made at present to reduce the price of cotton organic clothing so as to make such apparel items more accessible to the average user. Recycling is important and so is the concern for the future of the environment, but nobody can think of such generous issues when there is a big money crisis and you can’t pay for the regular necessities. Companies such as Levi or Nike have already started offering organic products, and even if the items contain a combination of conventional and organic fabric, the quality is definitely superior to plain conventional stuff.
